The house consists of an entrance hall, living room, a dining room with a kitchenette, and a piano rialzato (raised floor) with two double sofa beds and a bathroom. On the piano seminterrato (half-buried floor) there is a double room, a twin room and a bathroom. Stepping outside you find a terrace with terrific views and a lovely garden.
The kitchen has a stove, fridge and coffee maker, and there is furniture for the garden. Maid service and cleaning is available on request, and guests have private parking. Olbia is 18 km away and San Pantaleo 3 km.
The Costa Smeralda itself is one of the best stretches of coastline of the entire Mediterranean, and the island of Sardinia a fascinating place to explore. Almost equidistant between the Italian mainland (200km away) and the north African coast of Tunisia, Sardinia adds a touch of the exotic to the Italian. Its distance from the mainland puts the island well off most tourist jaunts around Italy, and the novelist DH Lawrence, who loved the place, described it as ‘lost between Europe and Africa and belonging to nowhere’.
The other-worldliness persists with the mysterious prehistoric buildings known as nuraghi whose conical, stone-built forms pepper the island. These dwellings are a legacy of the long-lost original dwellers of Sardinia. There are many reminders of later settlers too, with the archaeological site at Nora boasting Roman and Carthaginian mosaics, a theatre and baths. Tiscali meanwhile is a vast cave housing the remnants of an entire prehistoric village (the answer, internet fans, is yes - this is where Tiscali have their origins).
And the local food will delight too. Like much Italian cuisine, that of Sardinia is all about the simple preparation of basic, fresh ingredients. Lobster or suckling pig will be grilled over open flames and scented with myrtle and juniper. There are fish stews, light and delicate pastries flavoured with orange and lemon water, and good local wines. Vernaccia is a famed dessert wine and the dry white Trebbiano makes a fine accompaniment to the abundance of seafood and fish dishes.
